Xbox Game Bar / Windows Game Bar is fine for a one-window clip with Win+G. It is the wrong loop for a layout with a game, a camera, and a mic in one scene. Game Bar writes a video file on the PC. This project records locally too, then lets you mix sources. Compare notes: switch from Game Bar. Home: home. Machine map: this computer.
What you are leaving
People collect Win+G clips the way they collect unsigned helpers. A clip of one game. A second clip of a desktop. A camera that never joined the same file. An unofficial exe on the Desktop that copied the project name. Two workflows then fight. Game Bar has no project file this app imports. Keep the video if those frames still matter. Extra unsigned helpers belong in the recycle bin after the official install works.
NVIDIA App / ShadowPlay is a different vendor capture path on NVIDIA GPUs. Streamlabs Desktop is a company desktop based on this project. Those are separate moves. Game Bar is the built-in Win+G overlay the guides leave. Versus Streamlabs: vs Streamlabs. Versus XSplit: vs XSplit.
One official Windows install
Pick winget or GitHub Releases. Stay on that door so two copies do not fight. obsproject.com/download is also official.
winget install -e --id OBSProject.OBSStudio Or take OBS-Studio-*-Windows-x64-Installer.exe from GitHub Releases. Safe fetch: download-safe. Windows notes: Windows install. Official site: obsproject.com.
- Install with the winget id or the current Windows x64 installer.
- Launch from Start.
- Create a scene. Add Game Capture or Display Capture for the same window you used to record with Win+G.
- Set the recording folder. Start Recording. Stop. Play the file.
- Keep the old Game Bar clip until the new take looks right. Then quit the extra unsigned helper.
Re-record, do not invent an importer
Open the same window. Add it as a source. Record. Game Bar files stay files. They do not become a scene collection automatically. Copy the old clip next to the new take if you still need both. Record walkthrough: record. First scene: first scene.
| You have | Do this |
|---|---|
| Win+G still bound | Record the same window as a scene. Keep Game Bar for a one-off clip if you want. |
| A finished Game Bar video | Keep the file. Recapture if you still have the source window. |
| A camera that never joined the clip | Add Video Capture Device to the same scene. |
| An unsigned helper on Desktop | Quit it. Install from winget or GitHub once. |
| Portable zip plus winget | Pick one for the job. |
After the first local file
Compare the new take with the Game Bar clip. If you need a camera and a game in one layout, that is the job Game Bar did not mix. Virtual camera: virtual camera. Hardware encode: NVENC.
Keep the old downloads until the new take looks right. Then stop using the extra unsigned helper. Repo: GitHub. Issues: obs-studio issues. Guides: guides.
Streamlabs and XSplit are a different move
Streamlabs Desktop is a company desktop based on this project. XSplit Broadcaster has paid editions. Those compares are separate guides. Do not treat Game Bar, Streamlabs, and XSplit as one pile. Versus Streamlabs: vs Streamlabs. Versus XSplit: vs XSplit. Switch notes for Game Bar also sit at switch from Game Bar.
Architecture still applies
the guides map Windows x64. The current GitHub tag also lists an ARM64 zip, macOS disk images, and an Ubuntu package. Mixing an x64 installer with an ARM64 PC is how a launch never shows a window. Match x64. Releases: which file. Portable versus setup: portable or setup.
Winget needs App Installer on Windows 10 version 1809 or later, or on Windows 11. If the command is missing, add App Installer from Microsoft, reopen the terminal, and run the id again. Howto: how to install winget. The winget-pkgs folder can trail the newest GitHub tag. Take the exe from Releases if you need the current tag the same day.
Take the steps in order on one Windows x64 PC so OBS Studio, Game Bar, and any portable folder do not fight over the same capture job in the same hour.
Work through the checklist on a single Windows x64 machine so OBS Studio remains the capture tool of record, with one install door and one scene collection, rather than a mix of portable folders and Game Bar hooks competing for the same window.
Frequently asked questions
Can I import Game Bar projects?
No documented importer. Keep the video file if you need those frames, or recapture the window as a scene. That answer stays tied to OBS Studio on Windows x64, the current GitHub release, and the winget id OBSProject.OBSStudio mapped in this guide.
Should I keep a Desktop helper beside winget?
No. One official channel. Wrappers are how two copies appear. GitHub, winget, or obsproject.com/download. That answer stays tied to OBS Studio on Windows x64, the current GitHub release, and the winget id OBSProject.OBSStudio mapped in this guide.
What about NVIDIA ShadowPlay?
That is vendor capture on NVIDIA GPUs. A different move. Game Bar is the Win+G overlay. Use NVENC inside this app when the GPU and driver support it, as current release notes document. That answer stays tied to OBS Studio on Windows x64, the current GitHub release, and the winget id OBSProject.OBSStudio mapped in this guide.
Where are product bugs filed?
obs-studio issues. Help: obsproject.com/help. That answer stays tied to OBS Studio on Windows x64, the current GitHub release, and the winget id OBSProject.OBSStudio mapped in this guide. Match the Windows x64 installer or winget id OBSProject.OBSStudio against the current GitHub release before you change anything else.
