What Game Bar shows

Win+G opens Xbox Game Bar. The overlay can record a clip, take a screenshot, and show a few widgets. That overlay is a Windows capture. It is not a scene collection. It is not a source list you can stack. Storage for those clips is usually Videos\Captures. Windows Settings still give another capture toggle. Those built-in tools stay useful for a short clip. They stop short of a canvas with several sources.

OBS Studio is the local recorder the guides install:

winget install -e --id OBSProject.OBSStudio

What a local scene adds

After you add a scene you get sources you choose: Display Capture, Window Capture, Game Capture on Windows, a Video Capture Device, images, browser sources, text. Audio meters live in the mixer. Settings then Output holds recording path, format, and encoder. Start Recording writes a file to that path.

That is why people leave Game Bar. The overlay already captured a clip. They need a layout that includes a webcam, a game, and desktop audio in one canvas. First layout: first scene and source. Local file: record locally.

No OBS Project account. Recordings stay on the PC unless you stream. License GPL-2.0. Files from GitHub Releases, winget, or links from obsproject.com.

Capture one window, not the whole PC

You do not have to capture every display. If Game Bar was on one game, add Game Capture for that executable. If it was a single window, add Window Capture. If it was the whole monitor, add Display Capture. Match the target you already cared about.

Game Capture is Windows-only in the official quick start. Display Capture and Window Capture cover the rest of a desktop session. A video capture device covers a webcam or a capture card. Mix them in one scene. Game Bar does not stack those as named sources.

NVIDIA App / ShadowPlay is another vendor overlay on NVIDIA GPUs. the guides do not treat it as an importer either. If you used that overlay, still rebuild the scene.

Recording path versus Captures

Game Bar clips land under the Windows Captures folder unless you changed that in Xbox Game Bar settings. OBS Studio uses Recording Path under Settings, then Output. Set a folder you control. MKV is the format the official recording guide recommends when a stop is not clean. File then Remux Recordings converts later.

Do not hunt Game Bar filenames as a project. They are videos. You can keep them as media. They are not a scene file.

Where the new files go: record locally. Encoder on NVIDIA: NVENC.

After the first recording

Watch the canvas. Confirm audio meters move. Record thirty seconds. Stop. Open the file. Then stop again. A scene is a layout. Streaming is a separate step with a platform login.

Windows Game Bar remains a fine overlay for a one-button clip. OBS Studio does not replace Settings. It replaces the moment you want sources Game Bar cannot stack.

Save the scene collection inside the app if you want to reopen it later. That collection is not a Game Bar import.

How to install, then record

On Windows 10 1809+ or Windows 11, run the winget command. On Windows x64, take OBS-Studio-*-Windows-x64-Installer.exe from GitHub Releases. Portable: OBS-Studio-*-Windows-x64.zip. Chooser: portable or setup. Winget detail: winget command. Full Windows walk: install on Windows. Safe download: download safely.

Unofficial sites copy the product name. Stay on GitHub, winget, or links from obsproject.com. Safety: is obs studio safe.

Keep Game Bar if you need it

Xbox Game Bar remains a fine quick clip. Temporary captures in the overlay are still a Windows tool. OBS Studio does not uninstall Game Bar. It covers the moment Win+G cannot build a scene.

Other recorders exist. Streamlabs Desktop: vs Streamlabs. XSplit Broadcaster: vs XSplit. Pick by job. For this migrate, the move is Game Bar capture to a local OBS Studio record of the same target.

Take these migrate steps on one Windows x64 PC so OBS Studio and Xbox Game Bar do not fight over the same window capture in the same hour. Finish the winget or GitHub install before you rebuild the scene, then confirm a short test file plays from the folder you set under Output settings.
